Allergies On The Rise

Research suggests that approximately 15 million Americans suffer from some kind of food allergy. (5.9 million of that figure accounts for children under the age of 18, although it is acknowledged that many food allergies are not even diagnosed until well into adulthood!) 

Between 1997 and 2011, the prevalence in food allergy in children has increased by 50 percent and the need for hospitalization due to allergic reactions has tripled in less than a decade. 

In fact, an adverse reaction to food sends someone to the emergency room every three minutes! 

Allergic reactions present themselves in many forms. 

Some include:
-Hives, rashes or flushing of the skin 
-Face, tongue, throat, or lip swelling or an itchy sensation 
-Digestive distress (vomiting, diarrhea, severe constipation)
-Coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath
-Dizziness or lightheadedness
-Difficulty breathing
-Loss of consciousness

Luckily, there are different tests available to diagnose most food allergies such as skin and blood panels. 

However, food sensitivities and intolerances are more tricky to pinpoint.
